On Friday 11th October, our Director Lukas Vondrovic and the Mayor of Jáchymov František Holý cut the ribbon in front of our new information centre, prepared in the Jáchymov Town Hall on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the operation of the Bratrství repository. In their speeches, both the Director and the Mayor expressed their joy at the pleasant partnership between SÚRAO and Jáchymov and wished the Bratrství repository many more years of safe operation. And we trust that both will continue to the satisfaction and safety of all.
On the first day alone, more than 160 people visited the newly opened centre. Our centre was a great success with the schools – over 130 pupils from Jáchymov and Ostrov visited us and strengthened their knowledge of geology, chemistry and physics. We are glad that we could contribute to the education of the young generation.
The icing on the cake of the whole programme was the screening of two episodes of the series The Universe Underground followed by a discussion with geologist Václav Cílek. The hall in the nearby museum was almost full. The audience asked excelent questions, which Dr. Cílek was happy to answer. We appreciate very much that Dr. Cílek came to us and discussed not only radioactivity.
Now it is your turn to go to Jáchymov to learn the story of the Bratrství repository. You will find out how a silver and then a uranium mine became a repository for low- and intermediate-level waste, what is the current situation, and much more from the world of SÚRAO.
