HotBENT project partner meeting in Czechia

We are honoured to host the annual in-person meeting of the HotBENT partners

21. November 2024

We are excited to welcome the HotBENT project partners to a meeting in the Czech Republic!

The HotBENT experiment, located in the Swiss underground laboratory Grimsel Test Site, focuses on studying the effect of high temperature on bentonite, which we aim to use in future deep geological repositories. The experiment examines two types of bentonite, one of which is from the Czech locality Černý Vrch.

The data we have been collecting continuously since the installation of the experiment in the rock in 2020 will clarify how bentonite interacts with the host rock at high temperatures, how its chemical properties change, whether microbial organisms live in such an environment and if corrosion occurs, and overall help improve prediction models for the future deep geological repositories.

Organizations from 10 countries are involved in the experiment and they meet regularly to share new findings. This year, we are delighted to welcome the partners to a three-day meeting in the Czech Republic. After two days of presentations, we will have an excursion to our underground research facility Bukov, where we will present our smaller experiments and their contribution to the development of the Czech deep geological repository.
